Prepair Them Young. Talk To Kids About Credit PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joe
Debt knows no boundaries. It does not follow age nor economic barriers. Its been said that the best way to control debt is to simply avoid it. Because of this, the earlier you start your credit career the better. Young people and students have a major advantage here because they are still young and just starting to delve into different financial realms. Its not always as simple as just getting a credit card and avoiding debt. A lot of first time credit users can be overwhelmed by how the credit industry works and all there is to it. This is why having advice from an experienced user is crucial.

This is where parents can play a major role in their kid’s lives. By teaching their children early in life about how credit works parent’s can take a major step towards helping their children avoid debts and credit problems later in life that can hound them for years and years and cost a lot of money.

So what can be done? The first and probably most obvious is to sit down with your child and tell them what credit is, and how credit cards work. If more information is needed, or perhaps specific details about credit card offers, then the internet is probably the best place to go. The credit industry is large and there are hundreds, if not thousands, of websites that offer helpful information. Be sure to crosscheck everything you read because not everything found online is truthful.

Secondly a parent can instruct their student or child in the best types of cards to get, when to get them, and the best ways to use them. For starters a co-signed credit card might work if your child is not in college, or simply adding your child to your credit card as an authorized user. This has benefits and problems. The benefit is that your child can learn how to use credit in a supervised capacity, where the problem is that whatever they do can and will affect your credit.

A student credit card is a great option for any college student who wishes to be responsible and mange their credit on their own. While they may be managing their credit on their own, they are still susceptible to making mistakes if not properly educated.  So even if they are going solo, any advice parents can give them will probably stick with them for years so be sure to teach them while you have the chance.

Lastly, prepaid cards are a great choice for learning when and where to use credit without the risk of spending what you do not have. The card can only be used for the amount that is paid into it so the risk of debt is low to none.

Educating children while they are young about the great uses of credit cards, and their inherent dangers can and will go a long way towards helping them build responsible credit habits, a strong financial understanding and a strong credit rating.
